DALLAS, Pa. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team took on the nationally ranked No. 22 Penn State Behrend Lions in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday afternoon. After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Bombers used a 98
th minute goal in overtime off the boot of
Rosie Bostian that stunned the Lions and won the match for Ithaca, 1-0. The goal was assisted by
Julia Cascone who setup the graduate forward who found the back of the net in the bottom left corner.
Saturday's win marked career win No. 400 for head coach
Mindy Quigg who became the 12th women's soccer coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 400 wins. Coach Quigg is also the third female coach in Division III history to achieve 400 career wins.
In the 11th minute
Grace Hickey was challenged for the first time all day, and made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless as she saved an Audra Kuzma shot attempt. Later in the half
Kaelyn Fernandez made a great shot from point blank range that was denied by the Lions goalie, Riley Morningstar.
The Bombers continued to press looking for the matches first goal. In the 30th minute,
Julia Cascone took a shot from outside the 18-yard box that missed wide left, but the shot seemed to fool Morningstar as she bobbled it a bit as she dove to stop it. The rest of the half played out with neither team getting any great chances in this defensive minded first half.
Early in the second half
Sarah Sinnott was given a great opportunity receiving a pass that came off a free kick, but her shot attempt missed wide right. A few minutes later,
Ally Stanton crossed a pass in front of the goal, but nobody was able to capitalize on the golden opportunity to break the scoreless tie.
In the 64th minute,
Zara Nourie took a shot from far out, but she could not generate enough power on it allowing for the goalie to control it easily. About 10 minutes later,
Grace Hickey was challenged and made a solid save off a free kick. The final whistle blew with match still deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes.
The Bombers generated an early overtime chance with
Julia Cascone seeing her shot saved by Riley Morningstar just 1:30 into the first overtime. She would then provide the key assist in the game-winning effort that was netted by
Rosie Bostian at the 97:24 mark. It was the fifth goal of the season for Bostian and it sent her team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Ithaca College will remain in Dallas, Pa. where they will face off against the host institution, No. 6 Misericordia University, on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
