SCRANTON, Pa. - The No. 20 ranked Ithaca College volleyball team secured a road victory against the University of Scranton on Wednesday evening, winning in straight sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-22). The Bombers victory over the Royals improves their overall record to 12-3.
The first set foreshadowed the competitive nature of the match, as both teams traded points early on. Scranton struck first with a kill and ace from Sophia Hadjiyane, but Ithaca quickly tied the score at 2-2 with kills from Anaya Prince and Ellie Benedict. The remainder of the set saw the teams exchanging leads, but Ithaca pulled ahead late with to two key kills from Gabriela Gonzalez-Abreu and Scranton's attack errors, extending their lead to 21-16. Though Scranton responded with a kill from Kassidy Means, it wasn't enough to close the gap. Gonzalez-Abreu delivered another kill and an ace to help the Bombers close out the first set, 25-17.
In the second set, Ithaca jumped to a quick 2-0 lead with a kill from Faith Sabatier and a setting error from Scranton. The Bombers maintained their lead throughout the set, allowing Scranton to tie the score only twice. At 22-22, Ithaca responded with a kill from Prince and capitalized on more Royals' attack errors, ultimately taking the second set 25-22.
The third set opened with Scranton taking a 2-0 advantage, but Ithaca once again answered immediately, scoring four consecutive points with a kill from Gonzalez-Abreu, an ace from Benedict, and two Scranton errors. The Bombers maintained control for most of the set with crucial kills from Gonzalez-Abreu, Naomi Clauhs, and Prince. However, Scranton rallied late, putting together five consecutive points to close the gap to 21-18. Ithaca responded with a kill from Maddie Cox and a key point from Jayden Wiese to regain momentum and close out the match with a 25-22 victory.
Gonzalez-Abreu led Ithaca's offense with 17 kills, while Anya Prince contributed seven kills and a match-high four blocks. Wesley Slavin helped lead the attack with 25 assists. On defense, Ellie Benedict anchored the team with 13 digs.
The Bombers return to Ben Light Gymnasium on Friday, October 11, at 7 p.m. to face Union College in a Liberty League matchup.
