William Smith Downs No. 19 Field Hockey with Second Half Comeback, 2-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 19 Ithaca College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 Liberty League matchup to William Smith at Higgins Stadium on October 5 to fall to 6-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Liberty League.

The Bombers came out strong with five shots on goal in a minute span midway through the first quarter, but each attempt was saved. The remainder of the period was a battle for possession and the opening 15 minutes ended with no score.

IC took a 1-0 lead with 10:24 remaining in the second quarter as the Bombers scored off a corner. Brenna Schoenfeld inserted to the top of the circle to Emma Garver, who sent a pass towards the cage and Meara Bury dove to redirect the ball into the goal for her second tally of the season.

William Smith tied the game at 1-1 with 8:42 left in the third quarter on a long pass well outside the circle that was deflected in by Mia Batchelder. The Herons then took a 2-1 lead with 4:53 left in the game on a corner attempt.

William Smith dominated possession in the second half of play as the Herons outshot IC, 7-2, until the Bombers managed to fire off two shots in the final 90 seconds of the game, but both attempts were blocked. William Smith also earned four corners in the final quarter.

Maeve Clark made five saves in the loss.

The Bombers travel to No. 18 Rochester on October 12 and then go to RPI on the 18th.
