No. 19 Field Hockey Falls at No. 20 Geneseo, 3-0

GENESEO, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 19 Ithaca College field hockey team dropped a midweek matchup, 3-0, to the No. 20 SUNY Geneseo Knights on the road Oct. 2. The loss brings the Bombers' record to 6-4.

With a matchup history dating back to 1999, the out of conference game rendered some chippy midfield play and little offensive possession on either side of the field, but the Knights made quick work with the Bombers' defense. Only 5:44 into play, Geneseo capitalized on its first shot of the competition to give the Knights an early, 1-0, lead.

The Knights would tally only one more shot on the quarter, but failed to convert any further. Geneseo's defense held the Bombers to no shots.

The second quarter opened in a similar fashion to the first with both teams struggling to find offensive opportunities. When the Knights found their opportunity five minutes into play, however, the Bombers' sophomore goalkeeper Abby Cannon was an anchor in the cage.

Sophomore striker Brady Sullivan was the first to test the Knights' goalkeeper, but Geneseo's defense kept the Bombers scoreless well into the second quarter. The Knights rattled off four more shots before one proved successful with just under three minutes remaining to put them in the lead, 2-0.

Senior midfielder Emma Garver put one more shot on the board for the Bombers, but failed to convert before halftime.

The Knights opened the second half with three consecutive penalty corners, rattling off one shot that was stopped by a diving defensive save by first-year defender Ellie Gipe. A fourth penalty corner, however, would find a hole in the Bombers' defense to extend the Knights' lead to 3-0 just under three minutes into play.

The Bombers would only find one scoring opportunity during the frame, with senior defender Madeleine Goodman firing one from the left side of the cage, but it was ultimately stopped and redistributed by a Knights defender.

The Bombers opened the final frame with a new offensive fire. After drawing a penalty corner two minutes into play, the Ithaca offense notched two shots from senior striker Natalie Descalso and first-year striker Mia Woodard that were both ultimately shot down by Geneseo's defense.

Despite outshooting the Knights 4-1 in the final quarter, the Bombers could not convert before regulation closed. The Knights ultimately tallied 11 shots to the Bombers seven while Cannon earned four saves in the cage. Both teams earned eight penalty corners.

The Bombers will return home for their second Liberty League matchup against the William Smith College Herons at 1 p.m. Oct. 5 at Higgins Stadium.
