ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team hosted Skidmore College on Carp Wood Field on Saturday afternoon in a key Liberty League matchup. Despite outshooting the visitors, the Thoroughbreds were able to score a 2-0 win over Ithaca. The loss drops the Bombers to 6-6-2 overall and 2-3-1 within conference play.
The Bombers controlled the possession through the majority of the first half, but it was a lapse in the defense that Skidmore was able to make the most of. David Garvin was able to win a 50/50 ball, was able to drive towards the net where he earned a one-on-one with
Johannes Berghahn and was able to slot the ball into the bottom right corner. The goal was scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half and was the first of the season for Garvin.
Prior to that effort, Ithaca came close to finding the back of the net, first in the 27th minute when
Jack Walker headed the ball just over the goal frame. Minutes later,
Emmett Enriquez dribbled along the byline and ripped a close angle shot that was saved by Will Devall. On the ensuing corner kick chance,
Myles Ryan had a free header in the box, but his attempt was blocked by a Thoroughbred defender. Ithaca really pressed for an equalizer during the closing stages of the first half and saw back-to-back shot attempts blocked in the box by both
Jared Krasnove and
Emmett Enriquez.
The Thoroughbreds goalkeeper Will Deval made another crucial denying a good attempt from the top of the 18-yard box from
Nick Dignazio. Skidmore looked to add to its lead when Nick Jardim placed a shot that was saved by
Johannes Berghahn at the 54:48 mark.
Shortly after,
Connor Tierney had the Bombers first scoring chance of the second half, but his header sailed right of the target. The teams traded possession with neither really generating much on the goal frame for the next 20 minutes of the match. The Thoroughbreds nearly went up 2-0 in the 82nd minute when Connor Mansfield saw his initial shot attempt saved but the ball squirted from Berghahn who composed himself and cleared the ball.
Skidmore was finally able to find the insurance effort at the 88:27 mark when Colin Goodhines was able to dribble through the IC defensive backline and he slotted his attempt into the bottom right corner of the net. Ithaca had the final shot attempt at the 89:37 mark but
Jared Krasnove's header off a free kick was once again saved by Will Devall.
Ithaca ended up outshooting Skidmore by a 20-11 margin but placed just three attempts on target.
Johannes Berghahn notched four saves in goal for the Bombers.
Next up, Ithaca will celebrate Senior Day when they welcome Vassar College to the South Hill on Saturday, October 26. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
