Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 23 Field Hockey Earns 2-1 Overtime Win at RPI

TROY, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 23 Ithaca College field hockey team secured its second straight Liberty League victory on October 18 as the Bombers defeated host RPI, 2-1, in overtime. Ithaca is now 8-5 overall this season and 3-1 in the Liberty League.

IC dominated vital stats in the game by outshooting the Engineers, 13-6, and earned 12 corners to five for RPI. That corner edge proved to be the difference as both Bombers goals came off penalty corners.

After a scoreless first half, Ithaca took a 1-0 lead midway through the third quarter as Catherine Papa snuck a close range shot past RPI's goalkeeper off a pass from Natalie Descalso. The corner started with an insert from Meara Bury to the top of the circle and Emma Garver sent a short pass over to Descalso, who found Papa open just a few feet off the left side of the goal.

IC held onto its one-goal lead until RPI knotted things up at 1-1 with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. The Bombers earned a corner shortly after the tie, but Garver's shot was saved to send the game into overtime.

It took the Bombers just over three minutes into the first overtime session to lock up the victory. Similar to the previous goal, Bury inserted the corner to Garver, who sent a pass to Descalso. But this time, Descalso ripped a shot towards goal and Bury closed in from her initial position to redirect the shot into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Over the past two games, Descalso has assisted on all four Bomber goals.

Maeve Clark picked up the win in goal with two saves in 63:23 of action.

Ithaca will host Vassar on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m.
