The Ithaca College sculling team traveled to Rochester on Saturday, October 12 for the Head of the Genesee. The Genesee is a 5k race that challenges competitors with its length, multiple curves and lack of distinct landmarks.
The morning's racing started off with a win in the W 1x for senior
Ashley Bailey. Bailey handled the 5k course in 23:28.1, just nipping her nearest competitor by .7 sec to take home top honors.
Ithaca's fleet of 2xs tackled the course next, proving close competition for each other, but finishing 29 seconds over the next closest entry in a field that included Flower City, RIT, University of Rochester, St John Fisher, and Clarkson. Senior captains
Maggie Farber and
Zoe Paradis Stern finished first in the event in 21:23.1.
Lily Babcock and
Julia DiCostanzo rowed 21:42.1 to claim silver.
Winifred Kanayo-Ezenwata and
Samantha Gallagher fought teammates
Juniper Gattone and
Beth Roberts for the final medal spot, with the Bomber duos finishing the 5k in 21:49.1 and 21:50.5 respectively.
Ithaca's 4x+ entries wrapped up the day with gold and silver in their event. Coxswain
Haley Beckford steered
Emma Hammel,
Emma Thorne,
Emmi Chen and
Hope Oliveira down the course in 21:06.7, while
Kaelyn Morandi drove
Calla Bobak,
Emily Murphy,
Kathe Ebert, and
Claire Edwards to a 5 second margin over RIT in 22:29.1.
Next week, the Bombers trade two oars for one for a sneak preview of sweep season at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Catch them in the Collegiate 8+ on Sunday afternoon.
