POTSDAM, N.Y. – The No. 12 Ithaca College women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory over Clarkson University in a Liberty League match on Saturday. Despite a scoreless first half, Ally Stanton broke the deadlock in the 60th minute, ensuring the Bombers' perfect conference record and extending their unbeaten streak to 9-0-3. Clarkson University fell to 3-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the Liberty League.
Clarkson nearly took the lead in the ninth minute when Callie Abel's header bypassed Grace Hickey, but it was ruled offside. Ithaca's Kaelyn Fernandez and Julia Cascone forced two saves from Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio within the opening 45 minutes of the match.
The Bombers dominated possession in the second half. In the 60th minute, they capitalized on a corner kick when Ally Stanton, unmarked, slotted the ball into the bottom corner past DiCaprio. This marked Stanton's fifth goal of the season, second only to Sarah Sinnott's eight.
Julia Cascone almost doubled Ithaca's lead in the 64th minute with a corner kick that hit the crossbar. It was nearly her second Olimpico goal in a week, having achieved the feat on October 5 in the Bombers win over St. Lawrence.
Clarkson's best chance for an equalizer came in the 87th minute when an Ithaca defender was penalized for a handball in the box. Maddie Lopol's penalty shot, however, went wide right. The Bombers held on to their lead in the closing minutes.
Ithaca finished with an 8-5 shot advantage, placing five on target. Grace Hickey remained untested in goal, with the Bombers making a crucial team save at the 77:23 mark.
Next up, Ithaca College will continue Liberty League play with a road match at Union College on Friday, October 18, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
