CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team won its eighth consecutive game with a 64–59 win over St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers took the lead early on through the first three quarters extending to the lead to up to 19 points, but the Saints battled back to make it a competitive game for the fourth quarter.
Anya Watkins and
Annabella Yorio led the Bombers offense, both racking up a double-double to end the game.
June Dickson added in 11 points with some big plays down the stretch when the Bombers needed her.
The Bombers offense was booming early on with a combination of layups and jumpers by
Anya Watkins,
Annabella Yorio,
Camryn Coffey and
Hannah Polce. The lead was quickly 10-3 with halfway to go in the first quarter. Yorio was present in the paint putting in layups and drawing fouls to convert at the free throw line. The Bombers had the lead by eight (18-10) heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth period between the two teams who were going shot for shot for the majority of the 10 minutes. The Bombers had big plays by Yorio and Watkins, but the Saints hit big threes to keep the score to ten.
Jillian Payne finished out the second quarter strong with a three to put the lead to 12 going into the second half in favor of the Bombers.
The third quarter was dominated by the Bombers offense with Yorio, Watkins, and Dickson putting back layups in an effort to extend the lead.
Tori Drevna put back a three to get the lead to 19 points. The Saints never gave up, and Shannon Rhone put back two back-to-back treys to keep the Saints in the game. The score was 47-34 with one quarter left.
Anya Watkins opened up the fourth with two good layups early on. St. Lawrence was hot from the three point arc and went on a 10-0 run early on to cut the lead to only seven points.
June Dickson responded to that run sinking a three once again making it a ten-point game. Jackie Malley came up big for the Saints adding in two more back-to-back-to-back threes late in the fourth cutting the lead to only one point.
The Saints energy was high, but Ithaca was able to stay composed and respond to the run. Dickson put back a jumper to make the lead four with 33 seconds on the clock. St. Lawrence was forced to foul late in the game with under a minute left, where Dickson put back her pair of free-throws and Watkins put back one. The Bombers ended up on top in the end winning the game 64-59.
Ithaca College increases their record to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the Liberty League. The Bombers will return to Ben Light Gymnasium next weekend to face off against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday night for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
