PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2023 season with a dominant 2-0 shutout of St. John Fisher University on Sunday at Growney Stadium. Ithaca is now 1-1 on the season, while Fisher falls to 0-2.
The Bombers controlled play from the opening touch and would go on to outshoot Fisher, 25-4, and earned 14 corners to three for the Cardinals. If it weren't for 17 saves from Fisher goalkeeper Sophia Trozzi, the score could have exceeded the two-goal spread.
Abby Cannon secured her first collegiate win with two saves in 60 minutes as she made one stop in the first and third quarters.
Ithaca cracked the scoreboard for its first goal of the season just at the end of the first quarter as
Juliana Valli found the back of the net at the 14:34 mark. The goal followed back-to-back penalty corners.
In the second quarter, the Bombers fired off eight shots but six of those attempts were saved to keep the game at 1-0 heading to the second half.
IC continued the offensive pressure with 11 more shots in the third period but were still unable to beat Trozzi, who made eight more saves over that 15-minute span.
Ithaca extended its lead to 2-0 early in the fourth quarter as
Meara Bury was awarded a penalty stroke and capitalized on the chance.
Ithaca will return to action next Wednesday, September 6 for a 7 p.m. game at Misericordia.
