DALLAS, Pa. – It was truly a tale of two halves at Misericordia University on Wednesday evening in a non-conference field hockey matchup as Ithaca College overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit with four second half goals to top the Cougars, 4-2. IC is now 2-1 on the season and is 6-0 all-time against Misericordia.
In the first half, Misericordia scored both goals late in the second quarter, including the final at the buzzer off a corner attempt. The Cougars' first tally came with three minutes to go.
Shots were 6-6 after 30 minutes of action, but Misericordia held an 8-5 edge in corners. IC put two shots on goal in the first quarter but were unable to produce any scoring chances in the final 15 minutes of the half.
The script completely flipped out of intermission and the Bombers dominated all 30 minutes, outshooting Misericordia, 17-1, to go along with a 6-0 edge in corners.
After 10 minutes elapsed in the third period,
Sarah DeVito got the Bombers on the board as she redirected a shot from the left wing off a corner attempt by
Natalie Descalso to make it a 2-1 game. DeVito inserted the corner to the top of the circle to
Emma Garver, who sent the ball over to Descalso for a wide-open look, and DeVito made her way back in front of the goal.
Barely three minutes later, it was déjà vu as another corner started by Devito to Garver resulted in the second goal of the game and season for DeVito on another deflection from an initial shot by Descalso to knot the game at 2-2 and send the contest into the final 15 minutes of play.
Nearly nine minutes into the fourth,
Ainsley Grant had a shot blocked, which was corralled by Descalso and sent over to DeVito for the eventual game-winner and her hat trick.
Juliana Valli added an insurance goal with less than two minutes to play after collecting her own rebound and scoring on an open net to account for the 4-2 final.
Alex Clough appeared in her first game of the season and made two saves in 60 minutes of action.
The Bombers are back home this Friday, September 8 for a non-conference tilt against Oswego at 4 p.m.
