ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team defeated the Nazareth Golden Flyers, 2-0, at Carp Wood Field on Saturday afternoon. The Bombers collected their fourth win of the 2023 season, giving them a 4-1-1 record.
In the win, Ithaca recorded 22 total shots to Nazareth's eight, with 13 of those shots being on goal. Ithaca also took nine corner kicks, while Nazareth did not attempt one. The high volume of shots from Ithaca provided a higher total of saved shots for the Golden Flyers, as they saved 11 shots, while Ithaca saved five.
The first half saw neither team score across the first 45 minutes of play. The first several minutes featured multiple freekicks for both teams as Nazareth attempted two within the first 2:10 of the game, and the Bombers took two corner kicks in the first 3:45 of gameplay. Ithaca managed to take ten shots in the half but saw none of them go through as Nazareth goalkeeper Annika Monfort recorded five saves in the first half. The Golden Flyers meanwhile only took three shots in the half, with Ithaca goalkeeper Grace Hickey saving one shot.
The second half saw a lot more action as the Bombers and Golden Flyers traded shots for the first 12 minutes of the half. Ithaca finally broke through with the first score of the game on a goal from Julia Cascone from 12 yards out in the 57th minute. About 20 minutes later, the Bombers would cash in on a free kick opportunity when Mia Medearis scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 79th minute. She was assisted by Allison Heft after the free kick from 30 yards out was recovered by the Bombers.
Sarah Sinnott and Ali Amari led the Bombers with three shots each, while Makaelynn Neivel and Tatum Overton led the Golden Flyers with five and two shots, respectively. Grace Hickey totaled five saves with zero goals allowed for Ithaca, while Annika Monfort saved 11 shots, but allowed two to see the back of the net.
The Bombers' next match is on Wednesday, September 20th against Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y. with a 6 p.m. start time.
