Field Hockey Drops 2-1 Decision at No. 9 York

YORK, Pa. – The Ithaca College field hockey team went toe-to-toe with nationally ranked No. 9 York College on Saturday at Kinsley Field but wound up on the wrong end of a 2-1 outcome. The Bombers are now 3-3 on the season, while York improves to 5-0.

IC and York were nearly deadlocked in shot attempts, as the Spartans held a slim 10-6 edge, but York did its damage in penalty corners with a 9-2 advantage as both goals came off those tries.

The Bombers applied early pressure in the first quarter as Juliana Valli and Catherine Papa each put shots on target in the opening three minutes. York was awarded its first corner of the day at the 10:06 mark and scored on that chance as Libby Wild put home a pass from Maycee Collison.

In the second quarter, the Spartans controlled most of the action with three shots and two corners in the opening eight minutes, but Alex Clough made a pair of saves to keep the score at 1-0. At the 25:09 mark of the contest, Valli knotted the score at 1-1 off a pass from the left wing from Papa.

The game would go into intermission at 1-1 after each team was able to record one more shot before the buzzer sounded.

York put together the first chance in the third period with a corner and shot, which was saved by Clough, nearly eight minutes in. The Bombers then countered with two shots by Natalie Descalso, but one was saved and the other went wide of target after a corner insert. Clough made one more save to end the quarter and keep the score at 1-1.

The Spartans would tally the game-winner at the 55:46 mark as Wild scored once again off a corner from Brooke Cordisco.

Ithaca will return home next Wednesday, September 20 for a 7 p.m. matchup with Brockport.
