CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team opened its 2023 season this past weekend competing in the annual St. Lawrence University Fall Classic.
Senior
Nicolas Luis won his first match in the "A Flight" singles, he defeated St. Lawrence's Cole Hamilton by an 8-3 score. He continued to roll in his quarterfinals matchup by besting Hobart's Nick Grosso, 8-6. On the second day of competition that was moved indoors due to inclement weather, Luis punched his ticket into the finals by defeating Hobart's Sean Pesin by an 8-4 score. He fell in the finals in a tough matchup against Hamilton's Connor Griff who bested him 8-3.
In the "B Flight" singles competition,
Gijs Fidler had the most success as he won a tie breaker over Gabriel Escobar from RIT, 8-7 (9-7). Fidler fell to Rahul Ravi dropping an 8-5 decision in the quarterfinals.
Both
Carlos Hernandez and
Ean Lantzy defeated their opponents in the first round within the "C Flight". Hernandez defeated Rochester's Josh Chu, 8-6. Lantzy was tested but he prevailed over Hamilton's Neal Gupta 8-7 (7-4). Neither was able to advance any further within the flight.
In doubles action,
Siddharth Vaada and
Nicolas Luis defeated their opponents from Hobart 8-5. They lost to the eventual "A Flight" doubles champions Connor Griff and Anson Anderson in extras 8-7 (8-6). Also competing and winning their first matchup together in the flight was
Emiliano Pedrero and
Gijs Fidler who defeated Troy Steiner and Achilleas Kousaridis (8-6).
Carlos Hernandez and
Jacob Wachs as well as
Ean Lantzy and
Jimin Woo both were tested in their first round doubles matchups, but the pair of Hernandez and Wachs prevailed over Union's Shreyas Kode and Kurtik Appadoo, 8-6. Woo and Lantzy defeated their opponents besting them 8-2.
The Bombers duo of
Eric Dubilirer and
Hampus Kristiansson were crowned the champions of the "B Flight Doubles C" as they won their first two matches pretty handily and in the finals they downed the pair of Cole Hamilton and Aidan Baracao from St. Lawrence, 8-2.
The Bombers return to action on Friday, September 15 to compete in The College of New Jersey Invitational.
