GENEVA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 25 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team had its bid for a Liberty League championship come to an end at No. 3 William Smith on Sunday as the Heron defeated the Bombers, 14-4, to earn an automatic trip to the NCAA Division III Championship. Ithaca finishes the year with a 12-8 record.
It was a slow start offensively for both teams as Ithaca scored the opening goal with 6:34 left in the first quarter from
Caroline Wise. William Smith would put home two goals over the final 1:09 on the quarter to take a 2-1 lead.
The second quarter was similar in terms of offensive output as the Herons outscored the Bombers, 2-1, once again to take a 4-2 advantage into halftime. William Smith went up 3-1 at the 10:28 mark, but
Lily Cody brought the Bombers back to within a goal with 3:49 to play before the Herons closed out the half with exactly one minute remaining.
Maizy Veitch got IC on the board in the third quarter with 9:07 on the clock to make it a 4-3 difference, but it was all William Smith from there as the Herons outscored IC, 10-1, the rest of the way to earn the 14-4 victory. Veitch would score once again in the fourth quarter on an advantage goal to make it 10-4, but William Smith scored the final four goals of the contest.
Lexi Held made 13 saves in the loss four her eighth double-digit save effort of the season.
