ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team celebrated its senior class on Saturday and the Bombers earned a pair of shutout victories over St. Lawrence University. With the sweep, Ithaca improves to 25-10-1 and 10-4 in the Liberty League as they will be at least the No. 3 seed in the upcoming postseason tournament.
Game One: Ithaca 1, St. Lawrence 0 (F)
Fresh off Wednesday's no-hitter, it was a perfect start to Saturday's doubleheader for
Riley Piromalli as she mowed down the first four hitters via a strikeout.
Haley Petrucci got the first hit of the afternoon singling to center field. She advanced all the way to third and
Olivia Comolli came up with the clutch at-bat driving her in on a line drive to left field.
The 1-0 lead proved to be more than enough as Piromalli continued to dominate in the pitching circle as she was perfect through the first four innings with six strikeouts.
Sela Scheinman made an outstanding diving stop in the field to rob Vivian Johnson of a base hit.
Piromalli carried a perfect game into the top of the seventh frame with the Bombers leading 1-0. Vivan Johnson broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off double, but the senior settled in and got back-to-back fly outs before striking out Stella VanGee to end the game. She finished with 11 punch outs.
Hudson Hassler,
Haley Petrucci and
Olivia Comolli each had a hit apiece in the IC victory.
Game Two: Ithaca 3, St. Lawrence 0 (F)
The Bombers once again scored the opening run, tallying the score in the bottom of the first.
Sela Scheinman walked and would score on smart base running after
Allison Dell'Orto walked as well. They went on to make it 2-0 exactly one inning later when
Kailey Collins drove in
Haley Petrucci on an RBI single through the left side of the infield. The hits kept coming as
Sela Scheinman drove in
Madison Casale with a single right back up the middle.
Up 3-0, Ithaca would threaten for more in the bottom of the fourth frame as
Madison Casale led it off with a hard-hit single. She advanced to second on a stolen base but was left stranded with Layne Frtiz getting out of the jam when Casale was thrown out at third attempting to steal.
The 3-0 advantage proved to be enough as
Anna Cornell spun it well in the circle. She retired the side in order, including a pair of strikeouts. She totaled 12 strikeouts in the shutout win over the Saints and improves to 13-4.
The Bombers will now wait and see where they fall in the Liberty League Tournament after the final weekend of the regular season wraps up on Sunday afternoon.
