ITHACA, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 25 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team defeated the No. 5 seed Vassar College by a final score of 21-13 in the Liberty League semifinal at Higgins Stadium on Friday afternoon. The win improves Ithaca's record to 12-7 on the season.
After falling to Vassar by a tight score of 13-12 earlier in the season, the heated back and forth battle continued into this one, as both sides put on a scoring clinic in the first half. The Brewers came out hot, scoring three goals less than three minutes into the game, getting out to an early lead of 3-1. Despite this, the lead didn't last long, with three straight goals from
Maddie Hall for her second in the quarter, followed by goals from Chloe Nordkye and
Elizabeth Green. Both teams would then trade goals, until Ithaca widened the gap to an 8-4 lead with one minute left in the first. Vassar would go on to sneak in two goals before heading into the second quarter.
In the second, the Brewers were able to keep the momentum going, coming all the way back to meet Ithaca at 9-9, but both
Maizy Veitch and Green were able to rally and convert on back-to-back goals. The Bombers went into halftime up 11-10, and from there on, it was all Ithaca as they were able to get out to a 17-12 lead in the third with key goals from Nordkye at the 7:07 mark off an assist from Hall and a shot from
Sydney Phillips at 2:43. Ithaca would tighten up its defense and continue its attack in the fourth getting out to its largest lead of 21-13, with some crucial saves out of her nine on the day from goalie,
Lexi Held.
The story of the game was again the scoring as Veitch paced IC with six points with four goals and two assists followed by Hall with five points with three goals and two assists. Outside of these two, Nordyke scored four total goals with
Caroline Wise and Phillips trailing with hat-tricks of their own.
Ithaca will look to claim their first Liberty League title in program history and secure an automatic bid to NCCA Division III Championship on Sunday against No. 3 William Smith at 1 p.m. in Geneva.
