Softball Splits with Scranton after a Pitching Dual in the Nightcap

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Ithaca College softball team was back in action on Tuesday as they ran away in a 11-1 win before dropping a 1-0 contest to the University of Scranton in an entertaining pitching dual. With the split, the Bombers improve to 19-10-1 overall, while the Royals now sit at 15-17.

Game 1: Ithaca 11, Scranton 1 (F)
The Bombers got things started right away as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week Suzie Williams drove in Sela Scheinman and that was followed up by a clutch double to right center field off the bat of Haley Petrucci. However, the University of Scranton had an immediate response when they came to the plate as they made it 3-1 when Jessica Stadler hit an RBI single into the right field gap.

That turned out to be the lone run that was given up by Riley Piromalli as she shut down the offensive attack by collecting a total of 13 strikeouts. She only gave up a total of four hits, and only gave up two after the first inning.

Ithaca carried its 3-0 lead into the fifth inning where they exploded for three additional runs, this time all three came off the bat of Haley Petrucci when she blasted a home run over the right field fence. It was her team-leading fourth of the season and was a no-doubter that padded the Bombers lead.

Up 6-1, Ithaca would score a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning as they were assisted by two Royals fielding errors. The Bombers would add three more runs in the top of the seventh frame with Jessie Lopez earning a pair of RBI after she pinch hit for Kailey Collins. Allison Dell'Orto plated Lopez for the final run of the game.

Sela Scheinman, Madison Casale, Haley Petrucci and Jessie Lopez each had a multi-hit game.

Game 2: Scranton 1, Ithaca 0 (F)
It was a true pitching dual as Anna Cornell squared off against Carley Noble as both only gave up two hits apiece. Cornell worked her way into trouble in the bottom half of the fifth inning after giving up an inning opening walk to Emmie Feltenberger. She was sacrificed over to second on a bunt and ended up scoring what turned out to be the winning run of the game on another bunt, but this one resulted in a IC fielding error.

The 1-0 margin turned out to be enough as the Bombers had chances first in the top of the fourth when Sela Scheinman opened the frame with a single and stole second base, but Ithaca was unable to cash in. Tava Kasper led off the fifth inning with a double, but she was left stranded.

Anna Cornell finished with eight strikeouts in the pitching circle.

The Bombers will return to Kostrinsky Field on Wednesday, May 3 when they host SUNY Geneseo for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
