Ithaca Softball Sweep Clarkson to Improve to 18-9-1

ITHACA, N.Y. -  The Ithaca College softball team returned to Kostrinsky Field on Thursday and earned a pair of key sweeps over the visiting Clarkson University Golden Knights. The Bombers walked it off in the bottom of the ninth inning to score a 1-0 win before cruising to a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1: Ithaca 1, Clarkson 0 (F-9)
It was a pitching dual to start as both starters were on top of their respective games in the pitching circle. Riley Piromalli spun three strikeouts across the first three innings and only allowed one base runner.

The Bombers nearly got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Hudson Hassler and Allison Dell'Orto had two big hits and a steal. But Ithaca was unable to move them as Riley Page struck out the final batter of the inning to strand the runners.

Kailey Collins had a big double in the bottom of the fifth, but the runner ended up being stranded after Hudson Hassler lined out to the center fielder.

Riley Piromalli opened the inning hot with a strike out followed by two more outs. This left the Golden Knights with zero runs, zero hits, and zero left on bases.

The top of the eighth frame was strong for the Bombers with Piromalli striking out three Golden Knights right off the bat. The bottom of the eighth looked promising as Sela Scheinman and Allison Dell'Orto ended on third and second base. With no one to bring them home, the end of the eighth ended scoreless.

With still no score going into the bottom of the ninth, the Bombers landed a base hit sending Madison Casale to first base. A fielding error from the Golden Knights sent Casale to second. Sela Scheinman had clutch at-bat as she ended the game with a double bringing home Madison Casale for the 1-0 final.

Piromalli only allowed three hits across her nine innings of work as she finished with nine punchouts.

Game 2: Ithaca 4, Clarkson 0
Ithaca came out hot in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Scheinman got the Bombers rolling with a base hit and steal, followed by a Hudson Hassler single to left center to bring her in. Suzie Williams then answered with a double to bring her home to earn her seventh RBI of the season.

Anna Cornell remained unrattled all day, escaping the first inning by striking out two batters leaving two at first and third, and in the second, striking out another with the bases loaded. On the offensive end, Kailey Collins doubled to center, but was left on base.

The Golden Knights continued to get on base in the fourth, but were unable to get on the scoreboard, as Hassler ran in to catch a pop fly in right field, leaving runners stranded at first and second.

Tava Kasper who doubled to left center, got brought in by Haley Petrucci to bring the score to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Madison Casale and Kailey Collins were also able to get on base, however the Bombers failed to capitalize.

In the fifth, Allison Dell'Orto sped around the bases, with a base hit and steal to second, followed by another Williams single along the first base line to bring her home; pushing the lead to four. The Bombers defense continued its relentlessness, not allowing Clarkson to score despite allowing two hits, and having two runners in scoring position.

Cornell closed out the game with nine strikeouts and only two walks, as Clarkson left nine on base in 28 at-bats, to bring the game to a final score of 4-0.

Ithaca College advance to 18-9-1 on the season with an upcoming road trip to the University of Scranton on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
