KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 19 Ithaca College baseball team scored 12 total runs in their final at bats during a doubleheader at the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday to top the Mariners, 8-4 and 10-3. Ithaca is now 4-1 on the season.
The Bombers scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning in the opener to secure the 8-4 victory and then plated seven runs in the 10th inning of the night cap.
GAME ONE: Ithaca 8, USMMA 4 (7 Innings)
IC and Merchant Marine played to three scoreless innings to open the doubleheader, but the Bombers struck first with three runs in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from
Matt Fabian and
Ethan Rothstein, followed by a run-scoring double by
Gil Merod.
The Mariners answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth and plated two more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
Ithaca erupted for five runs in the top half of the seventh to secure the victory, 8-4.
Rothstein led off with a double and then Merod laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Collin Feeney tied the game with a base hit to right as Rothstein scored. After the second out was recorded, Conor Pedersen doubled to left and
Garrett Callaghan drew an intentional walk.
Nicholas Cutaia gave IC a 5-4 lead on a base hit to right and then Fabian drove in a pair with a single to left field.
Kyle Lambert finished off the complete game in the seventh as he fanned seven batters over the course of his outing to no walks. Lambert allowed nine hits and three earned runs in his first win of the season.
Fabian, Callaghan and Rothstein all recorded two hits in game one.
GAME TWO: Ithaca 10, USMMA 3 (10 Innings)
Ithaca built a 3-0 lead through seven innings of play as the Bombers scored once in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Louis Fabbo, who went 5-for-6, drove in the first run of the game with a single to left to bring home Fabian. A groundout from Rothstein in the sixth plated another run as Cutaia scored and then Fabbo drove home another with a double down the left field line, bringing in Fabian.
The Mariners battled back to knot the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth on a single to left and a two-run base hit to centerfield off
John Griffin.
Colin Leyner started on the mound for IC and struck out 12 batters over 8.0 innings and allowed just three hits and two walks before giving way to Griffin, who picked up the win.
Landon White finished off the game with a scoreless 10th inning.
In the top of the 10th, Cutaia led off with a walk and then was pinch ran for by
Colin Shashaty. A fielder's choice by Fabbo recorded the first out of the inning, but a walk to
Ethan Daddabbo put two runners on. Rothstein gave IC a 4-3 lead with a base hit and then Feeney was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Riley Brawdy drove in two with a double to the gap, giving IC a 6-4 lead. A passed ball brought home the seventh run of the game as Feeney scored. An RBI bunt from Shashaty continued the rally and then Fabbo put the game away with a two-run single.
The Bombers head to St. Joseph's-Long Island tomorrow for a single game at 1 p.m.
