ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team dropped a tight, 9-8, game to No. 14 Cortland at Higgins Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Bombers are now 1-1 on the season.
Cortland struck first with a free position goal at the 10:03 mark of the opening period. The Red Dragons tallied another free position with 5:34 to go and then extended their lead to 3-0 less than two minutes later on a transition goal to force Ithaca to call timeout.
Ithaca got on the board with 3:36 to go in the quarter as
Chloe Nordyke scored her fourth goal of the season. Cortland got that goal right back less than a minute later to keep it a three-goal difference at 4-1.
The Bombers answered early in the second quarter as
Maizy Veitch capitalized on a turnover caused by
Phoebe Hosford, which led to her first collegiate assist with 13:38 remaining to make it a 4-2 game.
IC knotted the game at the 10:03 mark of the quarter as Veitch found
Maddie Hall open in front of the cage and Cortland needed to call timeout to stop the three-goal run for the Bombers.
The Bombers continued their run to five straight goals as Nordyke scored on another transition chance after a caused turnover and assist from Hosford at the 7:04 mark. IC then led, 6-4, as
Sydney Phillips tallied a free position goal with 4:33 to go.
Ithaca extended its goal run to six straight with 10:10 left in the third quarter as Phillips notched another goal off a pass from
Hayley Armstrong. Cortland ended the run with 5:24 on the clock to pull to within two goals at 7-5.
Cortland trimmed the difference to a goal at 7-6 with 32.5 seconds left in the third quarter. The Red Dragons then tied the game at 7-7 with 12:12 left in regulation and took the lead less than a minute later, 8-7, on a free position.
The game was once again knotted up with 6:31 left as Phillips and Armstrong hooked up again to make it an 8-8 contest, but Cortland went back ahead with four minutes remaining.
Ithaca had a chance to tie the game late in the game after a timeout with 1:24 on the clock. Cortland came up with a huge save and ran out the remaining time for the 9-8 win.
IC hosts FDU-Florham on Saturday at 3 p.m.
