ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's swimming & diving program had several outstanding performances across the board, which included the Bombers 200-yard medley relay team winning by a split second in an epic back-and-forth race with RIT after the first day of the 2023 Liberty League Championships. Overall, Ithaca sits in first place after Wednesday's swimming competitions as they have totaled 377 points to lead the other eight Liberty League schools.
Not only did the Bombers relay squad of
Matthew Johnston,
Michael Paulos,
Ben Young and
James Collishaw capture first in the 200-yard medley, but they reset the championship record time at 1:29.38 as they bested the four from RIT who finished at 1:29.39. In the 500-yard freestyle, IC had a pair of top-5 finishers with
Ryan Cooke scoring third with a time of 4:38.29 in the finals as he was followed by
Santiago Ludwig's fifth-place swim of 4:39.59.
Paulos earned himself a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a finals time of 1:54.28. RIT's Brendan Kapp won the event touching the final wall at 1:51.87. In the highly contested, 50-yard freestyle
James Collishaw reset the team record in the prelims and went on to best that in the finals at 20.21, but it was good for second behind RIT's Mike Atanasoff (20.13). Both reset the previous fastest recorded time in the LL championship event.
Day two of competition continues tomorrow with swimming preliminaries at 10 a.m., diving preliminaries at 1 p.m. and finals for both at 6 p.m. The day will begin with the 200 freestyle relay, followed by the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay. On the boards will be the men's 1-meter dive.
