GENEVA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's soccer team had a 0-0 tie going into the halftime break but Hobart netted four goals as they pushed past the Bombers 4-1 in Sunday's Liberty League Championship. The Statesmen netted three goals in a 22 minute stretch during the second half that gave them breathing room.
Playing for the second time this season the No. 1 seeded Hobart and No. 3 Ithaca very much felt each other out in the first 45 minutes of this match as each team was held to just one dangerous chance. The Bombers recorded theirs in the 13
th minute as they pressed up the sideline but
Landon Hellwig's shot attempt sailed wide of the goal frame. The Statesmen forced sophomore goalkeeper
Johannes Berghahn into a 38
th minute save as with a nice flurry of play they gathered the rebound with Chris Friedlander ripping his shot wide.
The goalless deadlock was finally broken in the 52
nd minute. The Statesmen once again put together a good flurry within the '18 as the first Quinn Phillips attempt was blocked by an IC defender but they gathered the rebound and Zai La Outerbridge pushed the ball into the back of the net.
Hobart would score two further unanswered goals the first coming in the 63
rd minute when Quinn Phillips scored an unassisted effort, and they made it 3-0 at the 75:53 mark when goalkeeper Guillermo Castandeda assisted on a Frederick Madsen goal.
The Bombers would attempt to cut into the deficit as graduate defender
Brendan Lebitsch netted a goal that was assisted by Gustav Baurele in the 85
th minute, but Hobart would score one further insurance effort.
Hobart ended up outshooting Ithaca by a 17-6 margin placing seven on target compared the two produced by the Bombers.
Johannes Berghahn made three saves in goal for IC.
The Bombers likely will conclude their season with an 8-6-4 record as they were Liberty League runners-up for the second time in two years. The 2023 NCAA Selection Show will take place on Monday, November 6 at 2 p.m.
