BALTIMORE, MD. – The nationally ranked No. 24 Ithaca College field hockey team saw its magical season come to a close in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships as the Bombers lost to No. 4 Johns Hopkins University, 3-1, at Homewood Field. Ithaca finishes its year with a 15-7 overall record.
Hopkins controlled play for most of the game and outshot Ithaca, 15-2, and owned corner attempts, 12-2.
Despite the disparity in those categories, the Bombers found themselves in a 1-1 tie after the first quarter. Hopkins struck first in the 10th minute at the Blue Jays deflected a shot off a corner, but IC equalized the game just three minutes later on a corner of their own as
Catherine Papa cleaned up a blocked shot by
Emma Garver to make it 1-1.
Garver also tallied a defensive save in the game.
The Bombers were unable to produce another shot in the game and Hopkins put the contest out of reach with two third quarter goals in a span of three minutes to push its lead out to 3-1 – the eventual final score.
The Blue Jays took 10 shots over the final 30 minutes of play and
Alex Clough made five saves during that same stretch.
Ithaca matched the third-most wins in program history and earned its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2000. The Bombers also won their first NCAA game since 1997.
