No. 20/21 Women’s Basketball Continues Rolling with Victory over Union College

SCHENECTEDY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team won its eighth consecutive game with a 50-39 win over Union College. It was a low-scoring affair between the two teams, but the Bombers great defense held the Dutchwomen to 30.8% shooting from the field and caused 20 turnovers. Hannah Polce and Natalie Smith led the scoring efforts for the Bombers, scoring 18 points and 15 points, respectively.

It was a slow offensive start for the Bombers, shooting 1-for-10 from the field through the first six minutes of the game. The Bombers were down 5–4 before Brady Lynch scored on two consecutive possessions, igniting a 9–0 scoring run for IC. Polce converted a big and-one opportunity and followed it up with a tough jump shot, with a defender in her face.

Leading 13-7, the Bombers suffered a three-minute scoring drought to start the second quarter. The Dutchwomen brought the game back within two, but three-pointers by Polce and Smith gave the Bombers a 19–12 lead. Smith continued an impressive stretch, scoring eight consecutive points for the Bombers. Ithaca finished the half on a 9–1 scoring run, taking a 28–15 lead into the half.

Union came out in the third quarter with an 8–0 scoring run to cut the lead to 28–22 with six minutes left in the period. With just over four minutes left, Cara Volpe got things going for the Bombers with four-straight points for the away squad. Polce finished the quarter with a tough basket just before the buzzer to give the Bombers a 34–25 lead.

Both teams traded scores to begin the fourth as the Bombers led 40-31 with five minutes remaining. IC continued to hold a comfortable lead late into the game, but two consecutive baskets by Union brought the game to 46-39 with 1:04 remaining. Polce made four free throws to put the game out of reach, taking the win 50-39

The Bombers return to Ben Light Gymnasium with a 14-2 record and remain undefeated in Liberty League conference play, hosting William Smith College on Friday. The Bombers and Herons tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
