Field Hockey Earns Strong Win on the Road at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Ithaca College field hockey team hit the road Wednesday night, September 28, to take on University of Scranton, coming out victorious with a 4–1 win. Seven different Bombers recorded a point as IC improved to 6-2 on the season.

The Ithaca College field hockey team used goals from midfielders Meara Bury and Jacqueline Mirabile, and strikers Emma Garver and Elizabeth Pillow. Strikers Morgan Mullen and Natalie Descalso and midfielder Brianna Lennon also recorded an assist each. Goalkeeper Macy Brandwein made six stops on seven shots on goal for the Bombers.

The game started out with back-and-forth action, as Brandwein made two saves in the first six minutes of the game, keeping the Bombers even. IC began to turn the heat up in the offensive zone with less than four minutes left in the first, getting two corner inserts and a shot on goal. Then, with just under three minutes left, Bury got one past the Scranton goalkeeper off the second corner courtesy of a Lennon assist.

The Bombers kept up the pressure in the second quarter, registering three shots in the first two minutes. The Royals had a chance to even it up right after, putting two shots on goal and putting a third one wide off a corner insert four minutes into the quarter. However, the period would end scoreless, and the Bombers would go into halftime up 1–0

The third would start similarly to the second, as the South Hill Squad had two shots on goal right off the start of the second half. After a corner insert started by Mirabile, she got a piece of a Descalso shot from the point to redirect it into the net five minutes into the third quarter. The Royals were unable to get the goal back, only shooting twice but neither on target. Then, in the final minutes of the frame, Garver got her second goal of the season off a Mullen assist, giving the Bombers a strong 3–0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Scranton started the fourth quarter similarly to how the Bombers began the second and third, by immediately generating scoring chances. The Royals would have two corner inserts and two shots, one on goal, within the first three and a half minutes. Off a corner insert, the Royals finally got on the board, scoring just under four minutes in. However, five minutes later Pillow would get that goal back for the Bombers and extend their lead back to three goals. Pillow's tally was her fourth of the year, tied for the team lead with Descalso, and her first goal in five games.

The Bombers would hold on to their 4–1 lead despite a couple of late chances for the Royals, winning their second game in a row. The Royals outshot the Bombers 15–12 and led 7–6 in shots on goal, but the Bombers led 9–8 in penalty corners and 6–2 in saves.

The Bombers next game is Saturday, Oct. 1 against Vassar College at Higgins Stadium at 1 p.m..
