ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team defeated the Vassar College Brewers with a late goal in the fourth quarter to win 1–0.
The Bombers improved to 7–2 overall and 2–0 against Liberty League opponents after senior striker
Morgan Mullen scored the game's first and only goal with 1:48 left in regulation. Graduate student goalkeeper
Macy Brandwein recorded her third shutout of the season, stopping the only shot Vassar put on goal.
The game began with a Vassar chance five minutes into the first quarter. The Brewers would get their lone shot on goal, and also a corner insert that generated a shot that was blocked just a minute later. The Bombers had a corner around the halfway mark of the period, but senior midfielder
Brianna Lennon's shot went wide. In the second quarter, senior striker
Elizabeth Pillow had a pair of chances, with the first one being saved and the second going off the mark. Ithaca's defense would have to stand tall one more time in the half with under eight minutes left, after the Brewers had a pair of corner inserts. The first one had a shot that was blocked, and the second also had a shot, but it went wide.
The first half would end with just four shots for Vassar and three for Ithaca, each with one on goal. Each team also had three penalty corners in the half.
The second half started in a stalemate, as neither team had a scoring opportunity until 10 minutes into the third quarter. The Bombers would get two penalty corners in the final four minutes, with sophomore striker
Natalie Descalso and freshman striker
Brenna Schoenfeld both getting looks, but the former went wide, and the latter was saved. The Brewers started the fourth quarter strong, nearly breaking the tie a couple of times. Vassar had four corners in a four-minute span early in the frame, but the Brewers could only get one shot that was wide out of their chances. With just under two minutes left, the Bombers were awarded a penalty corner. Lennon received it and sent a shot in that was redirected by sophomore striker
Emma Garver and saved, but Mullen buried the rebound and give the Bombers the win.
Ithaca is now 3-3 all-time against Vassar, with each of the last three games being decided by a 1–0 score. The game would end with the Bombers leading in shots 7–4 and shots on goal 4–1, but the Brewers had seven penalty corners to the Bombers six.
The Bombers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Utica, New York to take on Utica University at 7 p.m..
