Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team suffered an overtime loss to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons Wednesday night, losing 2–1. The Bombers fall to 4–1 on the season.
The Bombers were outshot 14–4 in the game, and the Red Dragons led in shots on goal 8–2 and corners 15–4. Graduate student goalkeeper and Liberty League Field Hockey Defensive Performer of the Week
Macy Brandwein made eight saves, keeping the Bombers in the game. Sophomore striker
Natalie Descalso scored the lone Bombers goal off an assist from sophomore striker
Emma Garver. The goal was Descalso's third of the year, and the assist was Garver's second of the season. Descalso recorded both of the team's shots on goal.
In the first quarter, the Red Dragons were the aggressor, leading in shots 4–0 and putting one on goal. Brandwein stood tall and shut the door on Cortland, but the defense also held up, bending while not breaking and making key defensive plays to stop the Red Dragons from a couple of high danger scoring chances. The Red Dragons were able to generate four corner opportunities, and had a goal waved off for one due to a foul just before the shot.
However, the Bombers fought back in the second quarter, putting the Red Dragons on their heels at times. The Bombers had two corner chances, and two shots from sophomore strikers Descalso and
Juliana Valli nearly putting the Bombers in the lead. The Red Dragons had three corners, but the Bombers defense shut down everything the Red Dragons threw their way, preventing Cortland from recording a shot in the frame.
After halftime, the first chance of the second half went to the Red Dragons on a corner in the 34
th minute of the game. The Red Dragons were able to get around the Bombers defense for a clean shot from the point, but Brandwein kicked it out of danger. The Red Dragons immediately got another corner chance and almost took the lead, but the ball was kicked into the net, keeping it tied 0–0. The third was largely played in the Bombers own end before they were finally able to put Cortland on the defensive. With four minutes left, the Bombers had their two corners of the quarter, and with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter, Descalso scored from the top of the circle off an assist from sophomore striker

In the final frame, the Red Dragons put the pressure on the Bombers defense quickly, getting a corner just over a minute into the fourth. But, a shot went through the middle of the circle and went wide. The Red Dragons got another corner with 11 minutes left in the period, but it was defended well by the Bombers, forcing the Red Dragons to foul. However, the Bombers just weren't able to clear the ball, and the Red Dragons tied the game off of a corner with 10:15 left in the fourth. Play went back and forth after the goal, but Brandwein made two big stops on the Red Dragons, making two saves with five minutes left, as well as another one just a minute later. The Bombers best chance of the quarte came with two minutes left was senior striker
Morgan Mullen chased down a long pass and beat two defenders, but a foul was called. Brandwein made a huge save with one minute left, and a corner after was neutralized.
60 minutes would not be enough, as the teams were tied 1–1 after the fourth quarter. Just 16 seconds in, the Red Dragons had the first corner of the overtime period. The Red Dragons put a shot on goal, but Brandwein stacked the pads to turn it away. However, they controlled the rebound and scored shortly after, winning 2–1.
The Bombers will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they travel to Brockport to play SUNY Brockport at 4 p.m..
