ITHACA, N.Y. – Both softball programs battled through a few rain delays on Saturday afternoon, but Ithaca persevered and ended up sweeping Clarkson University by scores of 5-3 and 12-0. The doubleheader was originally supposed to by played at Clarkson, but with IC hosting due to heavy rain in Potsdam they still were considered the visitors and hit first in both games.
Ithaca 5, Clarkson 3 (F)
Neither team threatened to score a run before the game went into a rain delay after the top of the third frame. That theme continued until the Bombers made the most of a pair of hits and two fielding errors by the Golden Knights in the top of fifth inning.
The first run was plated when Belle De Oliveira reached on an error and
Sela Scheinman crossed home plate. That was then followed up with
Tava Kasper producing a solid at-bat, which resulted in a sacrifice fly that drove in
Allison Dell'Orto. Graduate student
Emma Kindblom continued the rally and delivered a two-run homer that was a no-doubter.
Riley Piromalli hit the first batter of the bottom of the inning but escaped the jam. She ran into trouble in the sixth frame as she gave up a two-run homer to Sarah Vaccaro.
Melody Kappel came into the game in her relief and allowed another run to make it 4-3.
The Bombers ended up scoring an insurance run when
Kira Flegenheimer hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh. Kappel locked it down in the bottom half of the inning to earn her third save this season.
