Softball Pick up Two More Wins on Tuesday with Sweep of SUNY Oneonta

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team hosted SUNY Oneonta for their first home doubleheader of the season on Tuesday and they used a late comeback to take the first game 7-6 before completing the sweep with a 2-1 in five innings. The nightcap of the doubleheader was called after the bottom of the fifth frame due to darkness.

Ithaca 7, SUNY Oneonta 6 (F)
After a scoreless top of the first, the Bombers picked up where they left off a day ago and brought home three runs to build an early lead. After Emma Kindblom drew a walk, Hudson Hassler came to the dish and delivered a two-run homer over the center field fence. Sela Scheinman made it 3-0 when she slashed an RBI single into the left center field gap.

SUNY Oneonta had an immediate response plating six runs on seven hits to knock Riley Piromalli out of the game within the second inning. Melody Kappel entered with one out and was able to get out of the jam with Red Dragons on first and second base. She followed it up five more innings of scoreless ball out of the pitching circle to pick up her first victory of the season in the circle.

Ithaca puled within two runs at 6-4 when Sela Scheinman stole second, which enabled Julia Loffredo to score on the throw. The Bombers bats really woke up in the bottom of the sixth. Rallying with two outs and runners on second and third, Hudson Hassler drew a four pitch walk to load the bases up. Kailey Collins then stepped to the dish and her double brought home Hassler, Allison Dell'Orto and Kira Flegenheimer.

Collins capped off game one by catching a flyball in left field and then throwing the runner out at first for the game-ending double play.

Ithaca 2, SUNY Oneonta 1 (F-5)
The Bombers once again scored first as Kailey Collins ripped a double to right center that brought home two runs in the bottom of the first frame. It turned out to be all the offense that was needed for Anna Cornell in the pitching circle as she held Oneonta hitless until the fourth inning where they scored their lone run as Megan Palmatier doubled and then scored due to an IC fielding error.

Cornell stranded a runner on second to pick up the win as the game was called due to darkness with the Bombers up 2-1 after the top of the fifth inning. The first year continued her strong start to the season as she finished with eight strikeouts and now has 63 this season, which leads the Liberty League.

Ithaca College (9-7) will travel to Clarkson University on Saturday, April 9 for their first Liberty League doubleheader of the season. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m.
