ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 16 nationally ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team scored six of the final seven goals over Ithaca on Saturday to earn the come from behind win. With the 13-12 loss, the Bombers concluded their season with a 10-6 overall record while RPI secured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championships.
Prior to first faceoff, the Bombers honored it's 2022 senior class for their hard work and dedication over the course of their playing careers at Ithaca College. The Bombers fed off the early crowd energy and scored the first three goals to gain the momentum.
Connor Brumfield tallied the opening goal off a nice dish from defenseman Demetri Lowery.
Drew Turner netted an unassisted effort and
Kyle Proctor put the Bombers up 3-0 with 9:47 left in the first quarter.
The Engineers would go on to score the next two goals before arguably the goal of the season for IC was netted by first year Jared Sedock. After picking up a ground ball after an RPI shot was blocked, Sedlock scooped the ball up behind his own net, spun and launched a shot that was netted with under a second remaining as RPI's goalie was caught napping towards his sideline.
RPI tied it up at five goals apiece when Connor Glosner scored a man-up goal with 11:39 left in the half. Both programs locked it down defensively during the final 10 minutes of the second quarter as each only allowed one goal as the score was tied 6-6 going into the halftime break.
Jake Erickson netted his 40
th goal of the season to equalize it just before the break.
Ithaca College controlled the first 10 or so minutes of the third quarter and they once again established a lead this time at 11-7. Goals during the outstanding stretch of play were netted by
John Sramac,
Jake Erickson,
Charlie Niebuhr and a pair was scored by
Willy Wright.
Ryan Raftery began the comeback attempt for the Engineers brining the score to 11-8 after he scored an unassisted effort with 3:45 left in the third. RPI won five faceoffs compared to the Bombers two wins and netted five-straight goals to grab all momentum at 13-11 with 7:05 left.
Kyle Proctor scored his second of the afternoon after a nice feed from Sramac, but it proved to be too little to late as RPI was able to bleed out the clock down the stretch.
The Bombers season concluded with a 10-6 overall record as
Jake Erickson finished as the leading point and goals scorer. He netted 42 goals, assisted 31 for a total of 73 points, which is currently tied for the most within the Liberty League with St. Lawrence's Chris Jordan. Erickson reset career-highs this year in points, goals and assists.
