Baseball Claims Series Finale at St. Lawrence, 9-3

CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team took the Liberty League finale at St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon with a 9-3 win at Tom Fay Field to take two-of-three against the Saints. Ithaca is now 14-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Liberty League.

Ithaca raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Buzz Shirley drove in Mike Nauta on a double to right, and after a Matt Fabian walk, Nicholas Cutati brought both runners home on a double to left-center.

IC added another run in the top of the third as Cutaia drove in Fabian with a single to left. Fabian found his way into scoring position with a two-out double.

St. Lawrence cut its deficit in half, 4-2, in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run to centerfield.

The Bombers got those runs back in the top half of the fifth as Gil Merod and Fabian blasted back-to-back homers to start the frame, extending IC's lead to 6-2. The Saints would score their final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off homer to dead centerfield.

Ithaca put the game away with two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to account for the 9-3 final. In the sixth, Louis Fabbo brought home Riley Brawdy with a sacrifice fly and then Shirley followed with an RBI groundout to push home Nauta. In the seventh, Fabian scored on a double off the bat of Cutaia.

Cutaia went 3-for-4 in the contest with four RBI, while Fabian, Nauta and Shirley each had two hits apiece.

Colin Leyner picked up the win in 6.0 innings of work as he struck out seven and allowed three earned runs on four hits. Erislandy Rives earned his first save of the year in 3.0 innings of relief with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.
