CLINTON, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 10 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team never trailed 14th-ranked Hamilton College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, as the Bombers came away with a 17-13 victory heading into the final regular season game of the season this weekend against Skidmore College. Ithaca improves to 13-2 overall on the year, while Hamilton drops to 7-6.
IC quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 2:16 of action as
Sydney Phillips scored on a free position at the 13:35 mark and then
Megan Motkowski followed up less than a minute later with her first of five goals on the day off a feed from
Madison Boutureira.
After a goal by the Continentals with 11:52 to play in the first quarter, the Bombers responded with a five-goal run from the 10:15 mark of the period to 2:41. Motkowski scored on back-to-back goals, the second coming off an assist from
Maizy Veitch. With the score now 4-1, Boutureira found the back of the twice in less than three minutes, while Phillips picked up her second goal of the afternoon to give IC a 7-1 lead.
Hamilton ended the first quarter at 7-2 after a marker with 1:50 remaining. The Continentals then scored three unanswered goals to start the second quarter and pulled to within a 7-5 difference, but Ithaca put home three-straight on the other end of the field to take a 10-5 edge into halftime. During that three-goal spurt, Veitch and
Alexa Ritchie each scored on advantage goals at 4:25 and 2:14 (assisted by Motkowski), and then Ritchie scored again with 1:04 left in the half.
As the second half got underway, the Bombers added two more goals to their lead as Veitch put home a pass from Boutureira and then assisted on a Motkowski goal to extend the difference to 12-5 midway through the period.
Hamilton fought back to a 13-9 spread by the end of the third quarter, and eventually to 14-11 after Veitch scored early in the fourth quarter, but IC notched three of the next four goals to go back up by five, 17-12, with just 2:44 remaining in regulation.
Phillips scored back-to-back on passes from Motkowski and then Motkowski put the game away with IC's final goal.
Motkowski would finish the day with eight points on five goals and three assists, while Phillips tallied four goals. Veitch recorded a five-point day with three goals and two assists, while Boutureira added four points on two goals and two assists. Ritchie chipped in two goals.
Rachel Rosenberg won six draws in the game and picked up three groundballs with three caused turnovers.
Kelly Mehorter scooped up four groundballs on the defensive side and caused turnovers.
Lexi Held posted her 13th win of the season with 10 saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.
The Bombers will play at Skidmore on Saturday, April 30 at 12 p.m.
