ITHACA, N.Y. – It was a beautiful afternoon on South Hill as the Ithaca College softball program celebrated Senior Day with a sweep over Skidmore College. The Bombers picked up the 7-0 win in the first game and managed to run rule the Thoroughbreds in the nightcap with the 10-2 victory. IC remains perfect in the Liberty League with an 8-0 mark and they improved to 17-10 overall.
Ithaca 7, Skidmore 0 (F)
Despite giving up a leadoff double to Katie Anderson,
Riley Piromalli was able to escape the jam by punching out two and calmly fielding a sacrifice bunt within the frame. In the bottom half of the inning
Emma Kindblom drew a walk and stole both second and third, but the Bombers were unable to make the most of the scoring opportunity as
Sela Scheinman and
Kailey Collins fell to strikeouts to end the inning.
Skidmore led off the second with a single from Chloe McGonagle and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Piromalli induced a fielder's choice and a strikeout to leave McGonagle stranded. Ithaca plated the first run of the game making the most of a leadoff double from
Daniella Mulvey. She was plated on a Skidmore fielding error during the
Tava Kasper at-bat.
With the 1-0 advantage, Ithaca's
Riley Piromalli settled into a groove and had seven strikeouts after a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning.
Allison Dell'Orto led off the bottom half with an infield single, stole second and advanced to third on the catcher's throw that went into the outfield. Dell'Orto was then driven in when
Julia Loffredo lined a single to center field putting the Bombers up 2-0.
Piromalli once again worked a perfect top half of the inning that was capped off by striking out Kaitlyn Judd.
Tava Kasper got on base after the Thoroughbreds center fielder dropped a fly ball off the bat of Kasper. The Bombers made Skidmore pay as
Emma Kindblom doubled to left field driving in Kasper and in the very next at-bat with a 2-0 count,
Allison Dell'Orto drove an RBI triple to the right field fence putting IC up 4-0. The Bombers added three additional runs, which included
Sela Scheinman driving in two RBI with a single through the left side of the infield that knocked out Skidmore starting pitcher Lindsey Raimondi.
Chloe McGonagle led off the seventh with an infield single, but
Riley Piromalli retired the Thoroughbreds lineup in order from there to earn her fifth win in the pitching circle.
Ithaca 10, Skidmore 2 (F)
The Bombers offense picked up where they had left off in the first game and exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the second to lead 4-0.
An outstanding defensive play was turned in by
Allison Dell'Orto as she laid out to make a diving stop on a grounder right back up the middle and was able to flip it in time to her double play partner
Tava Kasper.
Skidmore finally was able to get on the scoreboard as they plated two runs on three hits to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Bombers had an immediate response in the bottom half of the frame. They loaded the bases up and with two-outs
Tava Kasper delivered a bases clearing grand slam that sailed over the left field fence.
IC ended up turning to both
Melody Kappel and
Riley Piromalli in relief as they held the opposing lineup scoreless during the final two innings.
Tava Kasper finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a double, home run and six RBI.
The Bombers will return to action on Sunday when they host RPI for another Liberty League doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
