ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball team once again reignited its rivalry with crosstown foe Cornell University on Wednesday as they battled in a doubleheader at Niemand-Robison Field. It was the first-time since the 2019 season that IC battled the Big Red as Cornell took the first game by a score of 3-0 and used a walk-off homer to propel them to the 3-2 win in game two. The pair of non-conference losses drops Ithaca to 15-10 overall.
Cornell 3, Ithaca 0 (F)
Ithaca managed the first hit of the game of the top of the first when
Emma Kindblom slapped a single to center field, but the Bombers were unable to move her into scoring position. The Big Red made it 1-0 in the bottom half of the inning when Lilly Travieso doubled to the right center field gap that drove in Hanna Crist.
Riley Piromalli worked a strike out to get out of the jam. Cornell added an unearned run on a double play sequence that saw Celia Macari score in the bottom of the second frame.
Riley Piromalli was able to work around a couple additional scoring chances before the Big Red cashed in another run when Hanna Crist was plated on an RBI double off the bat of Olivia Rooney. The Bombers put runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the seventh, but Mia Burd caused three-straight pop outs to pick up the win in the pitching circle.
Ithaca finished with five hits as
Emma Kindblom,
Allison Dell'Orto,
Julia Loffredo,
Sela Scheinman and
Daniella Mulvey each managed singles.
Cornell 3, Ithaca 2 (F)
It was the definition of a pitching dual as both teams managed six hits apiece and the first run of the game wasn't scored until the Big Red plated an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cornell made it 2-0 when Hanna Crist connected on a solo homer to left field.
The Bombers scrapped across a pair of runs to tie it up in the top of the seventh inning. With an aggressive approach at the plate,
Tava Kasper swung at the first pitch and doubled home
Hudson Hassler.
Allison Dell'Orto drove in the other run on an RBI single. Ithaca appeared to have taken the 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly, but the runner was ruled to have left early.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Hannah Crist delivered the game-winner on her second homer of the game.
Anna Cornell pitched 5.0 innings and struck out five.
Ithaca will return to Liberty League action when they host Skidmore College on Saturday, April 23. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
