Baseball Downed by Brockport, 9-4

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team suffered a 9-4 non-conference setback at Brockport on Wednesday afternoon at Clark V. Whited Field. IC and Brockport added this contest against each other just a few days ago after the Bombers had a game scheduled at Utica canceled yesterday. The Bombers are now 20-8 on the season, while Brockport improves to 23-4.

Brockport got on the board first with an RBI base hit in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Eagles' lead-off batter reached base with a single and then moved up on a sacrifice bunt. He then stole third base to set up the RBI single through the right side of the infield.

The Bombers took over the lead in the top of the third as Ethan McDonough drove home Nicholas Cutaia, who led off with a base hit, with a single through the left side. After a single by Louis Fabbo loaded the bases, Buzz Shirley stroked an RBI single to left field to give IC a 2-1 lead. With the bases still loaded, Matt Fabian gave the Bombers a two-run lead with a sacrifice fly to bring home McDonough.

IC's lead was short-lived, however, as Brockport plated six runs on four hits in the bottom half of the third inning. The Golden Eagles filled the bags with one out on a walk, hit by pitch and single. The next batter would drive home a pair of runs to knot the game at 3-3. After the second out was recorded via strikeout, the bases were loaded once again with a walk. A two-run double ensued to extend Brockport's lead to 5-3. The Bombers went to the bullpen and removed Zane Grimes for Matt Chase, but the first batter Chase saw ripped a single to right field to bring home two more runs, making the score 7-3.

Brockport added another run to its lead in the sixth inning before IC got back on the board in the top of the eighth inning on a Cutaia RBI double, which brought home Fabian.

The Golden Eagles scored the final run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth to account for the 9-4 final.

Grimes started for IC and allowed seven runs on five hits over 2.2 innings of work. Chase allowed just one run on six hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief. Brett Budzak struck out the side in his one inning of relief.

The Bombers return to action this weekend for a three-game series against No. 22 Rochester on Saturday and Sunday.
