INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Jack Wadsworth continued his amazing debut season for the Ithaca College men's swimming & diving program and put together his best performance to-date to be named a National Champion on Friday. Wadsworth won his heat to be seeded first after the morning preliminary races of the 100-yard backstroke and he followed that up with a record-breaking performance in the evening's final.
Wadsworth (22.69) was just edged out by Tanner Filion (22.66) after the first 50-yards of the championship final, but Wadsworth gained the lead after the turning point and never looked back as he easily won with a recorded time of 46.45. That time not only reset his program and Liberty League record in the event, but it also shattered the NCAA record in the event.
By besting the field this was
Jack Wadsworth's second All-American honor in as many days and he became the first National Champion since 1996, when Collin Herlihy achieved the feat in 1996.
James Collishaw also competed in the 100-yard backstroke as he finished in 31
st place with a recorded time of 49.73.
The Bombers relay team of Collishaw, Wadsworth,
Stanley Zaneski and
Ben Young also competed in the 800-yard freestyle on Friday and they earned Honorable Mention All-American honors with a 16
th-place finish. The quartet recorded a time of 6:42.01.
The final day of the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships is slated to continue on Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m. They will compete in the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 400-yard freestyle relay, 1650-yard freestyle and the women will compete on the 3-meter diving boards.
