No. 23 Women's Basketball Dominate Liberty League Semifinal and will Play in Championship on Sunday

ITHACA, N.Y. - After one year off, the No. 23 Ithaca Bombers women's basketball program will once again advance to the Liberty League Championship following a dominant 69–48 win over the Union Dutchwomen.

Three Bombers scored in double-digits during the contest, forward Lindsey Albertelli led the way with a game-high 14 points, while graduate students, Megan Yawman and Grace Cannon scored 13 and 12 points respectively.

The Bombers got the scoring started with back-to-back baskets from Cannon and a layup from Abertelli to put the Bombers up 6–0 in the first two minutes. Union would open the scoring for themselves after a made jumper from sophomore Kennedy Clark to quickly answer back.

Just seven seconds later, Albertelli would make another layup followed by a jumper from Cannon to put the Bombers up 10–2, three minutes into the game.

Albertelli would be the spark plug for the Bombers in the first quarter as she would score two more baskets to help the Bombers go on a 14–3 run to push their lead to 15, 20–5 at the end of the first quarter.

Union would get the scoring started in the second quarter, with a layup from senior Darby Leid and another jumper from Clark, cutting the Bombers' lead down to 20–9. The Bombers would answer fast with baskets from Yawman and senior Cara Volpe to cushion their advantage back to 24–9.

A good jumper from Dutchmen junior Olivia Pachla would cut the Bombers' lead down to 17 points. Junior Natalie Smith would answer right back for the Bombers with a layup of her own followed by another Yawman three-pointer, to stretch their lead to 38–16.

Pachla would make one more jumper for the Dutchwomen, but no more scoring would occur for either side in the last two minutes of the second quarter. The first half ended with the Bombers in control, leading by a score of 39–18.

Thirty seconds into the third quarter, junior Megan Lee would get the scoring started for the Dutchwomen with her first basket of the afternoon. Nearly a minute and a half later, the Bombers would answer back with a layup from Abertelli, their first points of the half.

Both teams would exchange baskets back and forth until Cannon made a layup followed by a jumper to stretch the Bombers' lead back to 23. The Dutchmen would follow up Cannon's shots,  with two free throws of their own from Lee.

Neither team would be able to find the bottom of the net for nearly three minutes until senior Laura Vinton banked in a good jumper for Union. The Bombers would go a full four and a half minutes before scoring another bucket, which came on a free throw from junior Emily Dorn.

The Bombers would close out the third quarter with two free throws from Smith and a layup from Emily Dorn in the closing seconds to get the crowd on its feet. Ithaca took a 53–31 lead into the final quarter of play.

Opening the fourth quarter, both the Bombers and the Dutchwomen would trade shots with neither team being able to build a run in the first three minutes.

With about three minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Bombers went on a 5–0 run after a senior Camryn Coffey three-point splash and two free throws from Dorn, extending their lead to a game-high 25 points.

The Dutchwomen would score four points with under 1:30 remaining, but a trey from junior Graycen Dubin would silence any Union fans left in Ben Light Gymnasium. The Bombers won the game by a score of 69–48 and will advance to yet another Liberty League title matchup.

Saint Lawrence beat Vassar in the second Liberty League semifinal matchup, 80-63. Olivia Middleton led the Saints with 17 points while Katie Frederick grabbed 20 rebounds. Sarah Gillooly led the Brewers with 16 points and 6 rebounds.

Saint Lawrence came out with a strong start, scoring seven uninterrupted points within the first minute-and-a-half of play, but could not hold off Vassar for too long. The Brewers tightened their deficit to just three points, ending the first quarter down 22-19.

Both teams put up a scrappy, back-and-forth fights throughout the quarter, but Saint Lawrence came out with the lead. The Saints were up 43-36 going into the second half despite a buzzer-beating three from Vassar's Julia Harvey.

Vassar struggled to keep up with Saint Lawrence, only coming within seven points of the Saints the entire third quarter. Despite neither team scoring in the last 3:50 minutes of the quarter, Saint Lawrence maintained its lead and went into the final 10 minutes of play with a 60-50 lead.

Saint Lawrence never looked back from there. The Saints scored 20 points in the last quarter to punch their ticket to the 2022 Liberty League Championship and beat Vassar 80-63.

The Bombers will face the Saints tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium.
