Rutan’s Overtime Heroics Sends Bombers to Liberty League Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's soccer team defeated Clarkson University 1–0 in overtime to secure a spot in the Liberty League finals to play the top seed William Smith College.

Senior forward Delaney Rutan scored the game-winning goal in the first half of overtime for the game's lone score and her sixth goal of the season. The Bombers thoroughly outshot the Golden Knights 17–4 and led in shots on goal 8–1. Rutan led the Bombers in terms of shots with four total and two on goal, while junior forward Rosie Bostian recorded three shots and two on goal. Junior midfielder Ally Stanton and sophomore defender Allison Heft also had three shots, each with one on goal as well.

Despite only having one shot on goal, the Golden Knights still had their chances. Their first came just three minutes into the match with a corner kick, but that was neutralized by the Bombers defense. Seven minutes later, the Golden Knights would get a pair of corner kicks but were unable to put a shot on goal. By the 20thminute, the Golden Knights already had five corner opportunities, but couldn't cash in on any of them.

The Bombers got their offense going shortly after, with Rutan putting a shot wide right in the 22nd minute, and Stanton having a shot saved in the 28th minute. Ithaca had a flurry of chances from Stanton and Heft, but the score would remain 0–0 going into halftime.

The Bombers came out of the break aggressive, getting a corner in the 54th minute. Graduate student midfielder Megan Buttinger put a shot on goal off the crosser that was stopped, and Rutan had a chance off the rebound, but put it over the net. In the 63rd minute, the Bombers would have another chance off a corner, but Bostian shot at the middle of the net was stopped. Ithaca would end up outshooting Clarkson 10–1 in the second half, six of which were on goal. Junior goalkeeper Claire Reader made her first and only save of the match in the 70th minute on a shot on line for the middle of the net. Despite the shot differential in the first 90 minutes, the game would go into extra time scoreless.

In the 92nd minute of the match, the ball rolled towards the Clarkson net and the Golden Knights goalkeeper came out of the box to clear it. However, after a misplay, Rutan was able to chip it into the net, putting the Bombers up 1–0. The Golden Knights had a quality chance to tie the game before the second extra time period, but a free kick crossing attempt was cleared and the buzzer sounded.

In the final 10 minutes, the Bombers locked it down defensively, not ceding a shot to the Golden Knights with their season on the line.

The top two seeds in the Liberty League tournament will play for the conference championship on Nov. 6 at William Smith College, as the Bombers and Herons will meet for a rematch of the 2021 finals.
