ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team beat RPI 1-0 Saturday Oct. 23 on Carp Wood Field after
Delaney Rutan put the lone goal of the game into the back net after 90 minutes of play.
Ithaca tallied 16 shots and held RPI to just seven for the day.
Megan Buttinger led the Bombers with three shots and assisted Rutan's goal. Junior goalkeeepr
Claire Reader also added three saves in goal for Ithaca.
Despite the Engineers getting an early jump and earning a corner kick and two shots within the first two minutes of the game, the Bombers retaliated with strong defense and four shots within a span of less than two minutes. The Engineers did not take another shot for another 16 minutes, which was then saved by Reader.
After a foul on RPI that occurred 24 minutes into the first half, the Bombers attempted to put one on the scoreboard as
Julia Cascone took a shot to the bottom left corner of the net, but it was saved by the Engineers goalkeeper. Both teams fought to find the back of the net in the last 20 minutes of the first half with each tallying two shots, including another one from Cascone with less than a three minutes left, but could not find success. The first half ended 0-0 despite a strong offensive performance for the Bombers.
The Bombers came out firing in the second half earning three shots and three corners within the first five minutes of play. Buttinger added back-to-back shots just a few minutes prior to assisting Rutan's goal after a scoreless hour of play. Despite several substitutions in the remaining 30 minutes of the game, RPI could not find a way to score.
Ithaca attempted to score twice more after Rutan's goal but was unsuccessful in the attempt.
An impressive second half on defense for the Bombers held the Engineers to just one shot for the entire half. The Engineers shot did not come until 80 minutes into the game and was Reader's third save of the day. The Bombers came out on top at the end of match, beating RPI 1-0.
The Bombers next game is on the road at Liberty League opponent Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 p.m.
