Men’s Soccer Put Together Best Performance of the Season in 3-1 Win over Union

ITHACA, N.Y. – On a blustery Saturday afternoon on the South Hill, the Ithaca College men's soccer team picked up there most impressive win of the season as they defeated Union College 3-1. With winds gusting upwards of 20 miles per hour, the Bombers were unfazed by the elements as they scored two first half goals and added an insurance effort in the second half to improve to 3-6-5 overall and 2-1-3 in the Liberty League. The loss dropped Union to 3-7-2 overall and 0-4-1 in conference action.

With the teams trading possession in the minutes of the match neither was able to generate a scoring chance until the 12th minute. With the Bombers threatening, Reefe Harrison sent in a nice cross within the 18-yard box that was settled down by Jack McCarthy who fired it into the back of the net past an outstretched Sean Speck.

It was just over 12 minutes later that Ithaca was able to once again able to light up the scoreboard as this time it was an unassisted goal courtesy of Connor Tierney. Speck punched the initial free kick that was sent into the box by Jack McCarthy and the ball fell to Tierney who fired it into the bottom right corner.

Trailing 2-0, the Dutchmen sent in a nice through ball that forced a tackle in a box that resulted in a penalty kick. The chance was converted by Robbie Michaleski who netted his third of the season.

It was another penalty kick, this time in favor of Ithaca College as Christian Leach was taken down inside the box by a Dutchman defender in the 58th minute. The junior forward stepped up to take the penalty kick and fired it into the right-hand corner as a sprawling Sean Speck got a paw on it, but it wasn't enough to keep it out of the goal.

That final insurance effort proved to be enough as the Bombers soaked up the opposing pressure down the final 20 minutes of play. Ian Whitfield made five saves in goal for Ithaca College.

The Bombers will hit the road for their final away contest of the season next Saturday, October 22 at RPI. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
