Field Hockey Wins Seventh Straight in Double OT Victory at St. Lawrence, 2-1

CANTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team ran its winning streak to seven consecutive games and claimed its third consecutive overtime triumph as the Bombers defeated St. Lawrence, 2-1, at North Country Field on Friday afternoon in a Liberty League matchup. The Bombers are now 11-2 overall on they season and 4-0 in the Liberty League.

Also for the third consecutive game, Natalie Descalso netted IC's game-winning goal in extra time. Descalso corralled a loose ball in IC's attacking zone and moved down the right side. She then fired a shot, which was saved, but quickly secured the rebound and tallied her eighth goal of the season in the 75th minute.

Jacqueline Mirabile accounted for Ithaca's first goal of the contest in the sixth minute of action, and that lead stood for the Bombers until St. Lawrence beat Macy Brandwein in the 58th minute to knot the game at 1-1 to force overtime.

The Bombers had to work through the Saints' offensive possession for the first few minutes of the first quarter, but was able to persevere through it to put their first goal in the back of the net. Ithaca earned back-to-back penalty corners about six minutes into the game when Mirabile scored on the second chance off an assist from Amberly Christiansen. A strong Bomber defense prevented the Saints from scoring on four penalty corners and three shots through the remainder of the first quarter, which ended with an Ithaca 1-0 lead.

Despite their early offensive success, the Bombers were unable to score again in the second quarter of play. While they earned many attempts, the Bombers could not find the back of the cage on five shots and one penalty corner. However, Ithaca continued to play strong defense allowing just one shot the entire quarter and giving Brandwein her second save of the day. The Bombers ended the first half with their 1-0 lead.

Ithaca maintained its defensive energy through the third quarter and prevented St. Lawrence from scoring for another 15 minutes of action. The Bombers held the Saints to just two corners with no shots for the quarter to uphold their 1-0 lead. Ithaca was unable put another goal on the board in the third quarter on two corners and two shots.

The Bombers continued to hold off the Saints up until the last two and a half minutes of play when St. Lawrence finally scored after back-to-back corners to tie the game up 1-1. Despite Ithaca's aggressive offensive push for the remainder of the game and a shot from senior Elizabeth Pillow with just 30 seconds left, neither team was able to score again, and the match went into overtime.

Ithaca came out with a surge of energy as Morgan Mullen took a shot within the first minute of overtime, but was saved by the Saints' goalkeeper. The Bombers continued to fight and earn a penalty corner and shot before receiving a green card and being forced to play down a player for two minutes. Despite being down a man, Ithaca was still able to prevent the Saints from taking the game even with them earning a corner after getting the card.

The Bombers energy remained insanely high both on the field and the sideline going into the second period of overtime. Now back to full numbers on the field, Ithaca earned a penalty corner within 15 seconds of the first whistle and get a shot off, but the shot was saved again by St. Lawrence's keeper. Descalso took another shot for the Bombers that was saved nearly three minutes after the corner and just two minutes before she finally scored the game winning goal.

Ithaca dominated the game in shots, 21-5, but SLU held its own with a 12-11 edge in corners.

The Bombers are back at home on Sunday, October 16 to take on Skidmore at 1 p.m.
