Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Descalso Tallies a Pair to Lift Field Hockey over New Paltz, 2-1, in OT

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team hit the road for a Tuesday midweek non-conference matchup at SUNY New Paltz and came away with a hard-fought, 2-1, overtime victory at North Turf Field. Ithaca, now 10-2 on the season, has won its last five games (second straight in OT) and avenges a 3-0 loss last season to New Paltz, which was an NCAA Tournament team in 2021.

Natalie Descalso tallied both goals for the Bombers as she staked IC to a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute off a pass from Morgan Mullen.

The Bombers would maintain their one-goal edge for the remainder of the third quarter and for nearly 10 minutes of the fourth period, but New Paltz found the equalizer at the 55:15 mark to send the game into overtime.

In the opening extra session, it was a battle to maintain possess and produce any offense as neither team could create a scoring opportunity for seven minutes until Descalso fired a shot wide of target. Barely a minute later, IC regained possession along the right side of the field and Descalso raced past the New Paltz defense and fired a high shot over the lunging Hawks goalkeeper into the corner of the cage to send IC to a 2-1 win in the 69th minute of play.

Despite being outshot in the game, 22-9, IC used stellar goalkeeping and defensive play to keep the Hawks from securing the victory. Macy Brandwein made 10 saves in the win, while IC's defensive unit registered six defensive saves, including four from Bella McCollister and one each from Nicole Fortunato and Jacqueline Mirabile. New Paltz also held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Bombers head to St. Lawrence University this Friday for a 4 p.m. Liberty League matchup and then return home to host Skidmore College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
