ITHACA, N.Y. – After a close first quarter, the Ithaca College women's basketball team locked in defensively and pulled away during the middle portion of the game on Saturday for an 82-52 win over William Smith College. The Bombers held just a 14-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of play, but the offense picked up its rhythm for another Liberty League victory that helped them improve to 3-1 in conference and 7-3 overall.
Inside the Box Score
- Cara Volpe was very efficient from the floor shooting 7-of-8 for a team-high 15 points. She added five rebounds with fellow fifth-year Grace Cannon finishing with seven boards and 12 points.
- The Bombers used their depth all afternoon long to wear out the Herons as the IC bench outscored them 41-6. Hannah Polce was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range for 12 points and Emily Dorn netted 10 points along with four steals, three rebounds and three assists.
- Kerstin Kelly was a perfect 5-for-5 behind the 3-point arc to pace William Smith with 15 points.
- Ithaca shot 51 percent from the floor and made the most of its plus-10 margin in turnovers scoring 22 points off the William Smith miscues.
How it Happened
- A smartly assisted bucket that was dished out by Natalie Smith was converted in the lane by Cara Volpe who put the Bombers up 10-6 with 3:13 left in the first quarter. The Bombers began to tighten up defensively, just like the evening prior and opened the second quarter on a scoring run.
- The Bombers opened a 31-18 advantage on another Cara Volpe layup. They had their largest lead of the half at 13 points (37-24) going into halftime. Volpe totaled 10 points in the first 20 minutes of play to lead all scorers.
- IC continued to build momentum to open the third quarter. Megan Yawman splashed a 3-pointer that had the Bombers up 44-26 with 7:24 left in the third. Outstanding ball movement led to Hannah Polce draining a trey with 1:43 on the clock and on the ensuing possession despite being fouled, Alex Heuwetter nailed her shot from downtown. The Herons trialed 60-36 entering the final quarter.
- The Ithaca defense forced several turnovers down the stretch, and they answered every comeback attempt that was mounted by shooting 9-of-16 (56.25%).
The Bombers will return to Ben Light Gymnasium to face RIT (6-3, 3-1 Liberty League) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 11.
