ALFRED, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 19 Ithaca College football team improved to 3-0 on the season with a dominant, 34-0, victory over Alfred University at Yunevich Stadium on September 18. Ithaca shutout Alfred for the first time since 2004, as the defense allowed just 186 yards of offense to the Saxons, while the IC offense racked up 551 yards – 284 passing and 267 rushing – and 28 first downs on 84 plays.
Ithaca received the opening kickoff and began its drive at the 14-yard line. On the first snap of the contest,
A.J. Wingfield found
Michael Anderson for a 12-yard gain on a screen pass, but the drive halted shortly after that, as Wingfield was intercepted on 3rd-and-11.
Alfred put together a decent return on the sudden change and took over at the IC 31-yard line. The Bombers took the ball right back as
Michael Roumes picked off the Saxons on a deflected attempt.
The Bombers were unable to come away with any points after the interception, but IC flipped the field, as a
Nicholas Bahamonde punt went out of bounds at the Alfred 14-yard line.
IC turned the ball back over to Alfred on a fumble at the AU 30-yard line and the Saxons recovered at their own 24 with 2:19 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Bombers took a 6-0 lead on a 21-yard touchdown reception by Anderson with 11:40 left on the clock. IC began the drive at its own 37-yard line and marched down the field on seven plays.
With just over a minute remaining in the first half,
Jalen Hines punched in a 1-yard plunge and then
Andrew Vito gave IC a 14-0 lead on the ensuing two-point conversion. The Bombers ran off 13 plays during the drive.
The Bombers put the game away with two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Anderson scored his second touchdown of the contest on a 6-yard reception with 3:50 to go. After a three-and-out from Alfred on the next possession, the Bombers took over at the AU 38-yard line and scored seven plays later on a 3-yard run by
Jake Williams with 39 seconds to go.
IC's final touchdown of the matchup came with 7:21 left in regulation and
Conner Hayes found
Jake Ross for a 6-yard completion.
Wingfield went 28-for-34 for 226 yards and two touchdowns with an interception, while Hayes was 4-for-4 for 58 yards.
Hines totaled 99 yards on the ground on 12 carries, while
Jalen Leonard-Osbourne rushed eight times for 76 yards.
Andrew Vito led the IC receivers with 82 yards on nine receptions, while Anderson finished the game with 44 yards on four grabs.
Anthony D'Addetta hauled in one pass for 35 yards, while
Jacob Cooney,
Billy Tedeschi, Ross and
Jon Crowley all recorded receptions over 12 yards.
On the defensive side,
Stephen Soravilla led the squad with six tackles.
Ben Stola notched 1.5 tackles for loss, while
Dan Mason had a forced fumble and recovery on a punt.
The Bombers head into a bye week but will host Hobart College on October 2 at 1 p.m. for Alumni Weekend at Butterfield Stadium.
