BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ithaca College volleyball team split their doubleheader on Friday as the Bombers picked up their fourth win of the season against York College (Pa.) before dropping a very competitive match to the No. 4 ranked Colorado College. The victory over York College came in straight sets with IC winning 25-15, 25-16 and 25-14. The Bombers were then swept by Colorado College by scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-11.
York College of Pennsylvania vs. Ithaca College: The Bombers had the better hitting percentage as they spread the wealth with
Paris Buckner,
Camryn O'Leary and
Alexandra Montgomery each finishing with seven kills. IC opened the matchup fired up to be playing in its first match of the week and built a 12-6 lead within the first set. A highlight within that run was a
Camryn O'Leary kill that was setup by an assist from
Laura Severance. York went on a mini run of their own to cut the deficit to 15-11, but Ithaca were the beneficiaries of a few hitting errors that helped propel them to the 25-15 win.
The Bombers once again ran out to an early 15-6 lead in the second set, where they used a 9-1 scoring run to build the advantage. Back-to-back kills from
Jamie Koopman and
Jaelyn Hershberger helped build the momentum. The final two points of the set were scored by IC thanks to excellent swings from
Camryn O'Leary and
Aleka Darko. The squad finished with a match-high 14 kills within the set.
An early 3-3 tie became an Ithaca College lead when the team went on a 13-3 run that was capped off by an
Aleka Darko kill. A service ace from
Julia Costa occurred within the run as they once again capitalized on several Spartan mistakes. IC cruised to the finish with the match ending with a
Josie Hampton kill that was once again assisted by
Laura Severance.
No. 4 Colorado College vs. Ithaca College: The first two sets were the most competitive with the opening stanza featuring four different ties including 7-7. The schools went on trading points before a kill from
Jaelyn Hershberger made it 11-12 with the Tigers leading. Another outstanding swing from Herberger cut the deficit to two at 17-19, but Colorado College was composed down the stretch to hold on for the 25-20 win.
The Bombers scored two-straight points to make it 8-12 with kills from Hersberger and
Paris Buckner. Despite trailing 19-14, IC scored four-straight points to make it 20-18 and they got within one point of tying it at 20-21 but were unable to get over the hump. The Tigers took the second set by a 25-20 score.
Jaelyn Hershberger led Ithaca College with 13 kills and
Peyton Miller tallied 15 assists, while
Jordyn Lyn Hayashi totaled nine digs.
Ithaca College (4-6) will be back in Baltimore for another doubleheader of volleyball starting at 11 a.m. against Randolph-Macon College and will conclude play at the invitational with a matchup against Susquehanna University at 3 p.m.
