ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College softball program split a non-conference doubleheader against Alfred University at Kostrinsky Field on Thursday afternoon, as the Saxons took game one, 2-1, and the Bombers won game two, 2-0, behind a one-hitter from
Riley Piromalli. IC had its seven-game winning streak snapped in the opener and is now 22-6 heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
GAME ONE: Alfred 2, Ithaca 1
The Bombers were held hitless until one out was recorded in the seventh inning and then
Julia Loffredo singled through the left side. After Loffredo stole second base,
Kailey Collins sent a base hit through the right side to put IC on the board, but the Bombers were unable to score another run, and Alfred came away with the 2-1 victory in game one.
Alfred's Jessica Wilcox struck out 10 batters in the complete game win. Wilcox was perfect through 4.2 innings until the Saxons committed an error.
Alfred took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Saxons led off the contest with back-to-back singles. An error loaded the bases to set up a run-scoring single to right-center.
The lead grew to 2-0 for Alfred in the fourth on a one-out solo home run to left field.
Beth Fleming took the loss despite striking out 11 Saxons with no walks. Fleming allowed two earned runs on six hits.
GAME TWO: Ithaca 2, Alfred 0
Piromalli was light outs in the nightcap as she surrendered the lone hit in the top of the second inning on a single through the right side. Piromalli struck out five batters in the outing and walked two in 83 pitchers to improve to 13-1 on the season. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
The Bombers scored both runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Gabby Laccona led off with a single and then moved over to third after a walk to
Allison Dell'Orto and a double steal.
Julia Loffredo drove home Laccona with a sacrifice fly to right and then Dell'Orto stole on a wild pitch.
Alfred's best opportunity to score came in the top of the sixth as a lead-off walk advanced to third after a stolen base and groundout. The inning came to an end, however, as an attempted squeeze bunt was popped up to Piromalli, who doubled up the runner at third.
Ithaca will play Skidmore this weekend in a four-game series before moving onto the Liberty League Tournament next week.
