Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Thomas Edson, '21

Schade Leads No. 11 Women's Lacrosse to Upset of No. 2 Washington & Lee

Lexington, Va. - Mackenzie Schade made 16 saves as the 11th-ranked Ithaca College Women's Lacrosse team upset No. 2 Washington & Lee on their home turf. The Bombers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in program history with the win. It is the first time in program history that Ithaca has won two NCAA Tournament games in the same season.

How it Happened: Megan Motkowski started the game off with a free position goal, but the Generals answered right back. Caroline Grant scored on a free position to regain the lead, but Washington & Lee had the answer again to knot things at two. Indira Varma scored on a nice move from "X" to give Ithaca a 3-2 lead and spark a five-goal Bomber run to open up a 7-2 lead with 13:10 to go in the first half. The Generals scored two in a row to cut the lead to 7-4 but Ithaca responded with a four goal run to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.

Washington & Lee began to mount a comeback early in the second half, scoring the first three goals to cut Ithaca's lead to 11-7 with 24:58 to go, but Jacqui Hallack did what she has done all season, finding the back of the net to stretch the lead. Alexa Ritchie scored to extend the lead to 13-7, but Washington & Lee got one back.

The scoring stopped for almost 10 minutes of game time until Ritchie scored again to give Ithaca a 14-8 lead with 7:40 to go. Just 11 seconds later Washington & Lee responded to start a three-goal run and cut Ithaca's lead to 14-11 with 5:42 to go.

The Bombers remained determined and responded as Hallack found Alex Rabb on a fast break to take a 15-11 lead with 3:29 left. Just over one minute later Madison Boutureira iced the game with her third goal of the day, and the Bombers were able to dominate possession and run out the clock.

Game Leaders: Jacqui Hallack led Ithaca with four goals and an assist. Her second goal of the day gave her the program record for goals in a season as she now has 77 in just 15 games. Boutureira's hat trick was good for second on the team. Motkowski, Ritchie, Varma, and Caroline Grant all had two goals on the evening. Alex Rabb scored once and notched one assist.

Rachel Rosenberg and Rabb each recorded one caused turnover, though Ithaca's pressure defense and ride forced numerous errant passes by the Generals, who finished the day with 12 turnovers. Rosenberg also led the team with three ground balls and four other Bombers picked up two ground balls. Grant, Rosenberg, and Hallack came up huge at the draw control circle, as the three combined to out-draw Washington & Lee 19-10.

Schade had the most memorable game of her career, as the senior recorded a save percentage of .593 and held one of the highest scoring teams in the country to a season-low 11 goals.

Up Next: Ithaca will stay in Lexington to take on No. 4 Salisbury in the NCAA Quarterfinals tomorrow. Opening draw is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Washington & Lee.Â
