Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse | | Thomas Edson, '21

Memorable Season Ends in NCAA Quarterfinals for No. 11 Women's Lacrosse

Lexington, Va. - A memorable season came to an end for the 11th-ranked Ithaca College Women's Lacrosse team as the Bombers fell to No. 4 Salisbury, 16-5, in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Bombers finished the season 14-2 after making their second NCAA Quarterfinal appearance in program history and winning two NCAA Tournament games in one season for the first time in program history.

How it Happened: Ithaca jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Megan Motkowski ripped a shot from the middle of the fan and then had a pass attempt sail through and into the goal. Mackenzie Schade also started where she left off last night against No. 2 Washington & Lee, making some big early saves.

Salisbury got their first goal of the game with 22:37 remaining in the first half and used that goal to spark a 5-0 run. Jacqui Hallack ended the run on a free-position goal with 8:45 left in the half, but Salisbury scored the last two goals of the half to take a 7-4 lead into the break.

Hallack again found the back of the net to cut the Seagulls lead to two, but Salisbury responded in a big way behind stellar play from goalie Mary Claire Hisle. Hisle made 11 saves in the second half alone, including three on one crucial possession after the Seagulls took an 8-5 lead, and another in a one-on-one fast break situation for Hallack. Hisle finished with 13 saves for the game.

On the other end, Salisbury took advantage of a tired Bombers defense that held its own for most of the game. The Seagulls outscored the Bombers 9-1 in the second half to run away with the win and advance to the national semifinals.

Game Leaders: Hallack and Motkowski were the only two Bombers who scored. Hallack had a hat trick and Motkowski had two goals. Hallack finished the season with 79 goals, a program record, and moved into second on the career goals leaderboard with 186.

Hallack and Gillian Hanson led the Bombers with two caused turnovers apiece, while Hallack and Motkowski led the team with three ground balls each. Rachel Rosenberg earned six draw controls for Ithaca. Mackenzie Schade made six saves for the Bombers.

This marks the end for a stellar senior class which led the team through one of the greatest stretches in program history. The group accumulated a record of 47-14 in three full seasons and the abbreviated 2020 campaign. They made three appearances in the Liberty League Championship Game, won the 2021 Liberty League Regular Season Championship, and made two NCAA Tournament appearances. The Bombers went 3-2 in those appearances, matching the number of NCAA Tournament wins in program history prior to their arrival.
