Golf Sits in a Tie for 16th After First Round of NCAA Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. –
The Ithaca College women's golf team opened the NCAA Division III Championships with a +54 (342) at the Forest Akers West Golf Course to conclude the first round in a tie for 16th. Ithaca started its opening round on the back nine at 2:25 p.m. and was paired with Wisconsin-Whitewater (+37) and St. Mary's (Ind.) (+48).

No. 4 Carnegie Mellon leads the field after day one with a +24 (312), while No. 5 George Fox is +30 (318). No. 6 Williams (+32, 320), No. 2 Methodist (+33, 321) and No. 8 St. Catherine (+34, 322) round out the top five.

Forest Akers West Golf Course is a par-72 course that measures 5818 yards from the gold tees. Ithaca began the first round on the back nine Tuesday afternoon.
 
Peyton Greco shot the low round of the day for Ithaca and finished with an 83 (+11). Greco began the afternoon with five straight bogeys on the back nine. She then parred three of the final four holes on the back nine for a 42. Greco then parred three of the next four to start the front and finished with a 41.

Cristea Park also carded an 86 (+14) on the day and finished with two birdies. Park shot 43s on the front and back nines. She began the day with two pars on the first three holes, and after a bogey on the par-5 13th (459), she birdied the par-4 14th (356) to go back to one-over. Park ran into some trouble over the next nine holes, as she went 14-over, but settled in to go one-under to close out the round with a birdie on the par-5 8th (450).
 
Mary Gersec was the second up on the tee box at 10. Gersec started her round seven-over through six holes but birdied the par-4 16th (305 yards) and then parred out for a 42. On the front nine, she parred four holes and finished with a 44 to card an 86 (+14). Gersec parred three of the final four holes on the day.
 
Sophia Israel shot an opening round 87 (+15). Israel got off to a tough start, going six-over through the first four holes of the day, but parred or bogeyed the next 13 holes (six pars, seven bogeys). Israel shot a 45 on the back nine and a 42 on the front.

Caitlin McGrinder was the first to tee off for Ithaca in the opening round. McGrinder shot a 97 (+25) on the day after coming in with a 46 off the back nine and finishing with a 51 on the front. After starting the round with a triple bogey on the 10th, McGrinder birdied the par-3 12th (153 yards). She would then shoot eight-over on the six holes of the back nine for a 46.

Ithaca will get an early start tomorrow with an 8:50 a.m. tee time for the second round.
